Poquoson's Joanna Furst earns Girl Scout Gold Award
Joanna Furst, of Poquoson, has earned a Gold Award, the highest honor in the Girl Scouts organization.
Furst completed her project, The Golden Gazebo, which focused on improving the outdoor area at the Golden Living Center, a senior health care facility. Furst built a gazebo and planted 12 plants. After finishing her project, she hosted a garden party for the residents.
"My love for the outdoors and staying healthy inspired me to provide a place for other people to go to enjoy the outdoors," Furst said, according to a press release from the Girl Scouts.
Furst received the honor Sept. 13 from the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast.
The Gold Award is the highest honor and achievement in Girl Scouting, according to the release. It requires Girl Scouts to identify and address an issue in their community and carry out a project with at least 65 hours of leadership work.
Furst is a Girl Scout Ambassador in Troop 1134. She has been a Girl Scout for five years and is a junior at Poquoson High School.
The Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast, a United Way Agency, serves more than 16,000 girls in grades kindergarten through 12 and has more than 6,000 adult volunteers in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, according to the release.
