Poquoson Public Library marks successful summer programs
The Poquoson Public Library is celebrating the success of its summer reading programs.
The library hosted a number of clubs, activities and giveaways to encourage the community to read during the summer. In total, 433 children and teens participated in the event and read 8,954 books during the summer.
The event came to a close Aug. 21, with nearly 200 children and guests visiting City Hall for the grand finale celebration. Juggler Jonathan Austin provided entertainment and young readers were entered into drawings for prizes. The event ended with a hot dog picnic sponsored by the Poquoson Kiwanis Club.
This year, 47 teens completed their reading logs. Mary Beth Miles had the most books read, with 43. Twenty-eight of the teens celebrated their accomplishments with an ice-cream sundae bash on Aug. 12. Each teen who finished a log received an award. They ranged from gift cards to locker prizes.
This year was the library's 12th hosting a program for adults. Fifty patrons participated in the program and completed more than 215 book reviews, which will be posted by the library. Weekly prizes were given to readers and the grand prize, a Nook e-reader, went to Krista Grasser.
Poquoson Public Library is located at 500 City Hall Ave., Poquoson.
