Missa Bay announces voluntary recall of fruit, vegetable and sandwich products

Missa Bay LLC, a supplier of sliced apples to grocery and fast-food chains in Virginia and across the country, has announced the voluntary recall of several fruit, vegetable and sandwich products.

The company announced the recall in response to discovery of Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious or life-threatening foodborne illness in a person who eats a contaminated item, according to an Aug. 10 press release distributed by the company. The organism was discovered on equipment used to produce apple products.

Recalled products include apple slices distributed to McDonald's and Burger King locations in many states, and various apple and fruit snacks that contain "Ready Pac" labels. The recalled snacks have a use-by date range of July 8 through Aug. 20, according to the release.

According to the press release and information on the FDA website, no illnesses have been reported in association with the recalled products.

Missa Bay is a subsidiary of Ready Pac Foods Inc., based in Swedesboro, N.J. A total of 293,488 cases and 296,224 individual units have been recalled, according to the release.

According to information on the FDA website, symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea, although most healthy adults and children rarely become ill due to the organism. Consumers who believe they have purchased an affected product are encouraged to record the use-by date, dispose of the product and contact the Ready Pac Consumer Affairs Department at 800-800-7822.
